The Stickies is a term that was given to people in Ireland during the Troubles who believed that Irish Republicanism had or would need to undergo a change at the point of the Cold War. People like Cathal Goulding, who were involed in the IRA's leadership, believed that not only should the IRA lay down arms but they should become Internationalist, Secular, Liberal, Democratic and arguably Trotskyite. This belief led to a lack of action being taken by the IRA in response to sectarian Protestant violence as they believed that fighting with the Catholics would be sectarian and non-secular. However, many IRA men in Belfast refused to obey the orders from leadership as they were spat on and called cowards by civilians for not fighting. At this time, the slogan "I Run Away" was used to describe the IRA by former supporters. This led to an inevitable split in the IRA, some men simply didn't believe this new "Lefty Loosey" ideology and a violent splinter IRA was formed known as the Provisional IRA. Those who remained in the original army would be known as the Stickies as they wore Easter Lily Stickers, they engaged in party politics and recruited many young anti-war college kids. As time went on they became much less associated with Irish Republicanism as a whole and they eventually broke up into many different worker's parties, most would flock to a party which is currently known as People Before Profit and which is quite popular still. Others would go with the more common road of the Social Democrat party to further advocate Democracy and Liberalism. They were highly uninvolved in the troubles and just called for integration.
Personality
[edit]He likes talking about equality. Will gravitate away from the word "Ireland" during conversation as he prefers the word "World". Will give a long list of reasons about how voting can and will stop everything. Reputation is better than action for him. May boast about how he was one of the first Irish ideologies to advocate Gay rights. Huge fan of the term: Internationally oppressed.
